What is a Black Moon?

A black moon describes either the second new moon of a calendar month, a calendar month without a new moon, a calendar month without a full moon, or the third new moon of a season that has four new moons.

Black moons have ritualistic importance to people who subscribe to some forms of pagan religions, particularly Wiccans. Members of these religions believe certain actions, such as spells and rituals, are more potent when performed on the night of the black moon.

In 2014, black moons occurred on Jan. 30th and March 30th due to the two new moons in each of those months.
