What kills black mold?

To kill black mold, wash the moldy area with detergent, then coat it with a bleach and water solution. Finally, apply a borate-based solution to the area. Allow the surface to dry completely between each step.

Put on protective gear. Wear long sleeves, rubber gloves, safety goggles and a face mask before starting.

  1. Wash the moldy area
    2.  Mix 1/8 cup, or about half a cap full, of liquid laundry detergent with 1 gallon hot water, then wash the area until visible signs of the mold are gone.
  2. Bleach the surface
    3. Mix 1/4 cup bleach with 1 gallon water, then either wipe it on or use a spray bottle to mist on a generous coat of bleach water.
  3. Coat with a borate solution
    4. Mix 1/4 cup borate, such as Borax or washing soda, with 1/2 gallon of hot water, then apply it to the area.
