If there is visible blood in a persons stool, it means that there is bleeding in the some part of the digestive tract, according to WebMD. Bleeding that occurs in the lower part of the digestive tract will cause bright red blood to be visible while bleeding in the upper digestive tract will produce blood that causes the stool to appear tarry and black.
Health problems, such as colitis, diverticular disease and anal fissures can cause inflammation, tears and infections that result in blood being present in a persons stool, according to WebMD. Other health issues like cancer, peptic ulcers, angiodysplasia and esophageal problems can also cause blood to show up in the stool.
