The target blood sugar ranges for diabetic persons varies throughout the day and may range from 70 to 180 mg/dL, according to WebMD. Keeping tight control on blood sugar levels lowers a diabetic person's risk for several health issues including stroke, heart disease and kidney disease.
For non-pregnant adults over the age of 20, 100 mg/dL or less is ideal during fasting, and 70 to 130 mg/dL is optimal prior to meals, notes WebMD. After a meal, 180 mg/dL or less is normal. Before exercise -if insulin is taken- the target blood sugar level is at least 100, while before bedtime, 100 to 140 mg/dL is desirable.
