The targeted blood glucose level for adult, non-pregnant diabetics is 154 mg/dL, says the American Diabetes Association. However, ideal blood glucose levels are specific to each individual and based on various factors including the duration of diabetes, age and life expectancy and a number of other conditions.
Blood glucose levels tested when the patient has not consumed a meal in the eight hours prior is known as 'fasting blood glucose' and should range from 70 to 130 mg/dL, says the American Diabetes Association. 'Postprandial plasma glucose' indicates the level one to two hours after the start of a meal; this should always be less than 180 mg/dL.
