A BMI of 30.0 to 39.9 means a person is obese, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Extreme obesity begins at a BMI of 40.0.

Even though BMI is useful for most people, it has limits, explains the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. BMI may overestimate body fat in people with a muscular build, such as athletes. It may also underestimate body fat in the elderly and people who have lost muscle mass.

Some experts believe waist circumference is a better health measurement than using BMI, according to WebMD. People who accumulate fat in the abdominal region as opposed to the hips and buttocks are at higher risk of having weight-related problems with their health.
