The bones that comprise the rib cage and the pelvis provide the most protection to abdominal organs, or viscera. Both the rib cage and the pelvis are cage- or bowl-like structures that are comprised of multiple bones.
The abdominal viscera, or abdominal organs, of the human body are contained in the abdominal area of the body. These are the organs in the central part of the human body, and they make up the digestive system, circulatory system and respiratory system. The ribs protect the upper portion of the abdominal organs, including the lungs, while the pelvis protects the lower portion, which includes the intestines. The pelvis is made up of the two coxae (hip bones), the sacrum and the coccyx.
