The Old Testament mentions Elijah primarily in 1 Kings and 2 Kings. His name first appears in 1 Kings 17:1, and he goes "up to heaven in a whirlwind" in 2 Kings 2:11.

Elijah warns Ahab of a multi-year drought. The Lord tells Elijah to go east, where he resurrects the son of the widow of Zarephath. Elijah then returns to confront Ahab over worshipping the false god Baal. He proves the power of Yahweh on Mount Carmel, orders the deaths of the prophets of Baal and prays for rain to return. Elijah then flees to Mount Horeb to escape Jezebel's wrath. God sends out Elijah again, and he encounters Ahab and Ahab's son Ahaziah. Elisha succeeds Elijah as prophet after Elijah departs.
