What is the book Out of My Mind about?

"Out of My Mind" is a work of fiction about an 11-year-old girl named Melody who has a photographic memory and an incredible ability to process information. However, Melody is disabled and is unable to walk, talk or write.

In the book, Melody discovers a way that allows her to speak, but she does not get the positive reaction for which she was hoping. The book is inspired by author Sharon Draper's own disabled daughter. Draper wrote the book because she wanted to show the potential perspective of a person who cannot express her thoughts through the spoken or written word.
