Some of the books that no longer appear in all Bibles include Tobit, Judith, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch and the two volumes of Maccabees. Bible translators began to remove apocryphal books during the Protestant Reformation.

The book of Tobit recounts a Jewish family's exile to Nineveh and the titular character sending his son on a journey. The book of Judith tells the story of a widow who saves her city during a siege by seducing and killing the enemy commander. Ecclesiasticus is a collection of proverbs compiled by Joshua Ben Sirach. The book of Baruch is a collection of exhortations to the Israelites as told by Jeremiah's disciple, the titular character. The two volumes of Maccabees discusses the history of Jewish independence from Greece.
