How to remove the smoke smell from clothes?

Most of the smell of smoke leaves clothing after four to five washings in liquid laundry detergent. Mild smoke odor can also be removed by storing the item with a dryer sheet.

1. Check the labels
Before taking action to remove the odor from clothing, check the label to find out what material it is made from. Most cotton, polyester and cotton/polyester blends can be treated the same way, but leather requires a more gentle treatment.
2. Use dryer sheets
A mild smoke odor from cigarettes may be removed by sticking the item of clothing in an airtight bag with a couple of unscented dryer sheets. Leave the item in the bag with the dryer sheets for up to several weeks. The sheets may need to be changed out periodically as they absorb odors. This can be done with both cloth and leather items.
3. Wash repeatedly
According to the Department of Textile and Apparel Management at the University of Missouri, the most effective way to remove smoke is through repeated washings. Give the item of clothing four to five washings in liquid detergent or a powder detergent with bleach. It is effective on blends, cottons and polyester.
4. Air out the clothing
Place the item of clothing out in the sunlight to air out for a while. This can help lingering odors disburse, while the sunlight kills any unwanted odor causing bacteria. This is also an option for drying clothes after washing them.
