Newbery Medal-winning books include "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" in 1972; "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" in 1977; "Bridge to Terabithia" in 1978; "Sarah Plain and Tall" in 1986; and "Number the Stars" in 1990. Each year there is one medal winner and several honor books.

The American Library Association awards the Newbery Medal to recognize the most distinguished American children's books. The ALA established the Newbery Medal, the first children's book award, in 1922. Members, who include librarians from public libraries and schools, vote for the award annually. Voters consider factors such as plot development, delineation of characters and setting, and organization of ideas.
