Originally known as the B.A.A. (Boston Athletic Association) Marathon, the annual Patriots' Day race in Boston eventually came to be known simply as the Boston Marathon. Though the B.A.A.'s name is no longer part of the event title, this organization is still responsible for planning and hosting the race.

The original version of the Boston Marathon was born out of a desire to memorialize the practice of marathon running. This nostalgic spirit was inspired by the recent revival of the Olympic Games, which took place in 1896. The B.A.A. Marathon served as the conclusion to the 1897 B.A.A. Games
