As of 2014, Safeway is owned by Cerberus Capital, Inc. Safeway was purchased by Cerberus in early 2014. The chain was formerly owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts.
Cerberus Capital purchased Safeway for $9.4 billion. The firm already owns the Albertsons chain of grocery stores and has announced plans to merge the two. Many Albertson's stores were shuttered after the firm purchased the chain in 2006, leading to speculation that Safeway may be stripped in a similar manner. Cerberus may be required to divest itself of some existing stores to receive FTC approval. Cerberus also owns the Jewel-Osco, Star Market, Lucky, Super Saver, Shaw's and ACME grocery brands.
