Who fought in the French and Indian War?

The two main players in the French and Indian War were Great Britain and France, each of which owned significant portions of land in the New World. During the war French colonists and several Native Americans joined France, whereas British colonists and the Iroquois Confederacy sided with the British crown.

The war began over disputes surrounding borders and land possessed by the two European powers. Spain eventually entered the war on the side of the French. Great Britain secured victory, but at an enormous cost. It imposed heavy taxation on the colonies in order to pay expenses, and this was one of the factors which led to the American Revolution.
