The National Center for Health Statistics developed growth charts in 1977. The growth charts consist of percentile curves based on height, weight and head circumference. The charts are a diagnostic tool to help identify malnutrition and growth concerns.
The NCHS developed the growth charts to help parents and medical professionals track infant, child and adolescent growth in the United States. The World Health Organization have adopted these charts for worldwide use. The charts are revised periodically as more data becomes available. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made revisions in 2000 to create 16 updated charts, including a body mass index chart.
