What is Boursin cheese?

Boursin is a brand of Gournay cheese that is trademarked. It is a soft, creamy, high-butterfat-content cheese that is similar to cream cheese. It comes in a variety of flavors.

Created in 1957 by Francois Boursin in Normandy, the garlic and fines herbs recipe became the first fresh flavored cheese available in France. For many years, it was only produced in the Croisy-sur-Eure community in France. But, in 1990, the British and Dutch multinational corporation Unilever bought the brand. In 2007, they sold it to the French cheese marketer Group Bel. As of 2015, Boursin is still distributed by Unilever and made in the United States.
