Bob's Red Mill, Amy's Organic, Quaker Oats and Arrowhead Farms are brands that sell steel-cut oats as hot breakfast cereals. Steel-cut oats are not used in cold breakfast cereals, because this type of oatmeal requires 15 to 30 minutes of cooking.
Steel-cut oats are whole oat groats cut into two or three pieces to create a chewy cereal. They are also known as Irish oats or pinhead oats, and due to their cooking properties are not appropriate for baking. Baking recipes and quick-cooking cereals in the U.S. utilize rolled oats, which are whole oat groats steamed and rolled flat before packaging.
