Breast cancer with chest wall involvement means the primary cancer has invaded or is attached to the chest wall or skin, according to Texas Oncology. The cancer is considered to be Stage III breast cancer, and requires local treatment, including surgery and radiation, and systemic treatment, which may include chemotherapy.
Surgery and radiation are called local therapies because they treat the cancer in the breast and prevent it from returning in and around the diseased organ, but cannot treat cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, notes Texas Oncology. Systemic therapy focuses on destroying cancerous cells throughout the body, using treatment such as hormonal or biological therapies.
