How do you breed dogs?

Breed your dog by ensuring your dog's health, acquiring a stud and preparing for puppies in your home. Consult your veterinarian each step of the way.
- Make sure your dog is healthy
Have your pet checked by a vet to ensure her health. Mention that you intend to breed the dog.
- Find the right stud
Find the best match for your dog. Breed with good traits in mind. For example, pick a stud with an even temperament if you plan to sell the puppies as pets. Physical characteristics you desire should also be considered.
- Draw up a contract
Draft a contract outlining payment for the stud's services. Have the contract signed by the owner of the stud.
- Arrange ongoing care
Once your dog is pregnant, take her to the veterinarian for checks to ensure continued health.
- Care for the puppies
Your dog cares for her puppies through most of the first several weeks. Ensure they are healthy and their bedding is clean. Obtain vaccines and other medical care when your veterinarian instructs you to do so.
- Wean and socialize the puppies
Begin feeding the puppies a commercial puppy food at around four weeks of age. Weaning should take place by around eight weeks of age. Socialize the puppies to get them accustomed to being around humans.
