What is a brindle Akita?

A brindle Akita is an Akita dog with distinctive coat color patterns. The brindle pattern helps to determine an original Akita from crossbreeds. The colors accepted for a Japanese Akita are red, white and brindle. Loose skin, too much mass and a black mask are considered results of crossbreeding.
Some international kennel clubs distinguish between the American Akita and the Japanese Akita. All Japanese red or brindle Akitas must have urajiro markings, which require white on the cheeks, neck, chest, legs and tail. In the United States, Great Britain, Canada and other countries, all types of Akitas are accepted regardless of color or brindle and other markings.
