What brought about suspicion on Proctor and his family?

In Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," apart from Proctor and his family not attending church regularly, Proctor's youngest son was not baptized. When asked why by Hale, Proctor mentioned that he did not have complete faith in Reverend Parris.
Since Proctor and his wife were accused of witchcraft, Hale went to Proctor's house to ask him and his wife questions for determining whether they had anything to do with witchcraft. Proctor's answers made Hale suspicious, especially when Proctor and his wife only remembered nine commandments. Proctor forgot the commandment about adultery. The suspicions about Proctor and his family are mentioned in "The Crucible, Act 2." Miller was an American essayist and playwright.
