Are there brown recluses in Florida?

Brown recluse spiders are generally not found in Florida. The brown recluse is a species of spider whose venom is dangerous to human beings. It is identified by a violin-shaped figure on its back.

The brown recluse is about 1/2 inch long and carries its legs in a somewhat crablike fashion. This gives it its scientific name of Loxosceles reclusa; "loxosceles" means "slanted legs." During the day, the brown recluse spider is often found in places where humans work and live, such as barns, houses, schools and garden and tool sheds. It is also found outdoors, sheltering under rocks and debris. It comes out at night to seek prey.
