The BTU rating of a gas dryer has an indirect effect on its electricity consumption as it is used to calculate its energy efficiency ratio. The energy efficiency ratio is calculated by dividing the BTU output of the machine by how many watts it consumes.
A BTU is defined by how much heat energy is required to increase the temperature of a pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit. This measurement is more commonly used for HVAC units rather than gas dryers. In terms of energy conversion, 1,000 BTUs are the approximate equivalent of 0.29 kilowatt hours. Different appliance categories tend to use different unit measurements for its energy consumption.
