Bubble wrap is made out of polyethylene resin. Polyethylene is a frequently used plastic polymer first synthesized in 1934. Bubble wrap was invented in 1957 by inventors Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding.
Bubble wrap is made from solid polyethylene resin that is melted and then processed into plastic sheets. Suction is used on one sheet to create bubbles, and another sheet is sealed on top to trap the air so that the bubbles retain their shape. The inventors of bubble wrap originally intended their textured plastic concoction as a wallpaper but found little success. In 1959, bubble wrap was first used as a protective packing material by IBM for its 1401 computers.
