The bucktooth tetra is a freshwater fish of the characin family. It is notable for its bright red dorsal fin and two distinct black spots on its body.
The bucktooth tetra is native to the Brazilian Amazon and Guyana. The species was first described in the mid-1800s. The fish is light tan in appearance with black spots near the tail and dorsal fin. Despite the name, the bucktooth tetra does not show exposed teeth. An average fish grows to about 4.5 inches. It eats a standard diet of smaller fish and plants. This hardy fish is popular in the aquarium trade, as it can live for more than 10 years in proper conditions.
