To build a model train platform, cut and assemble the frame, cut and assemble the legs, attach the platform to the frame and the legs to the platform and add cross braces. Building a model train platform takes at least a whole day and requires one 4-by-8-foot sheet of plywood, a miter saw, two 8-foot 2-by-4 boards, 10 8-foot 1-by-4 boards, 1-inch and 1.75-inch drywall screws, four adjustable feet, 16 3.5-inch bolts with nuts, 32 3/8-inch washers, wood glue, a drill, a tape measure and a pencil.
- Cut the frame wood
Cut six 1-by-4 boards to 45.5 inches, making 12 total. These are the crosspieces. Make sure the cuts are square.
- Put the frames together
Set down two of the 8-foot 1-by-4 boards on top of the plywood. Space the crosspieces between the two boards with 16 inches between each. Drill two holes into each joint. Apply wood glue in each hole, and screw the two crosspiece into the frame with the 1.75-inch drywall screws.
- Make the legs
Cut the two 2-by-4 four boards in half. Attach an adjustable foot to the bottom of each.
- Attach the platform to the frame
Apply glue to the frame. Lay one of the pieces of plywood on top of this. Use the 1-inch screws to secure the plywood.
- Attach the legs
Place the platform upside down so that the frame is showing. Place a leg square in each corner. Use a 5/16-inch drill bit to drill two holes through the frame and leg. Use the 3/8-inch bolts to attach the legs. Place a washer between the bolt and the nut.
- Add cross braces
Cut the remaining 1-by-4 boards to 6-foot lengths. Cut each end at a 45-degree angle. Use these to make an "X" between the legs. Use the 1.75-inch drywall screws to attach the cross braces.
