To build a porch swing, decide between purchasing a kit or creating a plan, cutting the pieces and assembling from scratch. A kit typically includes precut pieces and all of the necessary hardware for assembly.
The following steps describe how to build a wooden porch swing from a kit.
Step 1: Dry fit all of the pieces.
This ensures that the kit includes all of the necessary pieces.
Step 2: Apply glue to the tenon pieces.
Most kits utilize a tongue-and-slot design, also called a tenon-and-mortise design, which creates a strong connection. Apply glue to the tenon, or tongue, pieces.
Step 3: Attach the tenon and mortise pieces.
Step 4: Drill screws through the tenon pieces.
The kit should already include predrilled screw holes.
Step 5: Assemble the seat back.
Designs vary, but many seat backs feature slats and a top and bottom rail. First glue all of the slats into the top rail, and then add glue and slowly slide the bottom rail onto all of the slats.
Step 6: Attach the sides.
Leave off the arms for now, as they can get in the way of the seat assembly.
Step 7: Assemble the seat.
Glue and screw in the seat slats, the supports and the aprons.
Step 8: Attach the arms.
Glue and screw in the arm rest on both sides.
Step 9: Perform any finish work.
This can include filling in screw holes and attaching brass bolts for hanging.
There are many ways to build a porch swing, but a kit offers a more economical solution compared to a fully built option, without the need for woodworking tools.
