In order to build a two-car carport, first research all local building codes and obtain necessary permits, create a plan and purchase the materials and then build the foundations and install the remaining framework and finishing materials. Consult a local builder with any questions regarding local building codes and requirements.
In order to build a two-car carport along the side of a house:
- Research
- Plan
- Build the foundations
- Install the joists and ledger board
- Install the walls and roof
Perform research on all local building codes and requirements for adding a carport, and obtain any necessary permits. Then locate, purchase or develop detailed plans for constructing the carport and purchase the necessary materials.
Choose the area on the side of the house for the carport, and mark the ground where the foundations and ledger board will reside. The foundations should be at least 10 feet away from the side of the house to allow enough room for two cars.
Dig the holes for the foundations, allotting for 12 inches in width and 35 inches in depth. Fill the holes with concrete and set in steel mounting brackets, ensuring they are level with one another. Allow the concrete to completely dry.
Bolt the ledger board to the side of the house and attach the joist hangers to the ledger board. Install the joists and remaining framework.
If side walls are desired, screw on exterior-grade plywood and finish in the desired materials. Then, create the roof from plywood and cover in roofing felt to finish the project.
