Bullet ants, or Paraponera clavata, most commonly live off plant nectar. They have also been known to eat other insects and other types of plant exudates, including sap, rubber and resin.
When foraging, each individual worker sets about to gather its own food. Bullet ants do not hunt as a community but as individuals, while other workers guard the nest, and forager ants predominantly search the forest canopy for sap and other insects. Since bullet ants build their nest in the bases of trees, most of their foraging occurs arboreally, with little foraging taking place on the ground. When food is brought back, it usually consists of nectar and sap.
