What do mullets eat?

Mullets are a saltwater bottom feeder and prefer a diet consisting of vegetation, algae and plankton. Mullets often take on the "flavor" of the waters they feed in, which means polluted waters can make mullet unsavory to eat.

Mullets thrive in subtropical and tropical areas, densely populating Florida's Gulf Coast. They are a schooling fish and often seen jumping and skipping above the water surface. This activity helps fishermen target schools for netting. An average mullet weighs between 2 to 3 pounds and is a popular game fish. Mullets are the only fish that, like chickens, have a gizzard that grinds vegetation for digestion.
