In order for a donation to be tax deductible, it must be a nonprofit organization. A tax professional can help determine if the charity meets the requirements.
Many religious and educational charities are tax deductible. The organization has to be approved by the IRS in order for a write off to be allowed. There is a limit on how much a person can right off when donating. No more than half of a person's income can be written off for donations. There must be proof when itemizing the deduction. A canceled check or receipt is enough proof in most cases. Items bought while volunteering can also be deducted.
