The U.S. stock market opens at 9:30 a.m. EST for regular trading on most week days, according to Scottrade. Pre-market trading begins at 6:00 a.m. EST on trading days. After-market trading starts just after the close of regular trading at 4:02 p.m. EST each day.

There are nine week days each year where the stock market is closed for holidays, including New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, according to Scottrade. A few times a year, the market closes early at 1:00 p.m. EST, but it always at 9:30 p.m. EST. Pre-market trading concludes at 9:28 a.m. EST and regular market trading ends at 4:00 p.m. EST daily.
