What is a butterfly pleco?

The butterfly pleco is a catfish species native to the tributaries of South America's Amazon River, and it's a popular aquarium fish. Reaching 5 to 7 inches in length, the specimen is identified by its striped body pattern of black and either gold or white.
The peaceful bottom-feeder may be housed with other non-aggressive tank mates. In captivity, its natural algae diet should be supplemented with live plants and vegetables, with feedings done at night. Aquariums should contain wood and flat rocks for the species to feed on and plenty of hiding spots; the nocturnal species uniquely alters its shade of color to camouflage itself within surroundings.
