In North America, buyers of junk tires are typically tire recycling companies, such as Liberty Tire Recycling, Global Tire Recycling and Phoenix Recycling Technologies. Recycled rubber tires are used, among other things, to make asphalt rubber.
It is estimated that 220 million pounds of ground rubber, or approximately 12 million tires, are used in making asphalt rubber every year. Asphalt rubber is used extensively in California and Arizona in highway construction, with Florida coming in a distant third. Ground tire rubber is blended with asphalt to extend the lifespan of road surfaces. Scrap tire rubber is used as part of the asphalt rubber binder.
