To calculate equivalent fractions, take a fraction and divide or multiply both of its numbers by the same figure. An action must always be performed to both parts of the fraction when calculating equivalent figures.
- Divide the fraction by figures that both the numerator and denominator are divisible by With 20/30, both the top and bottom numbers are divisible by 2, 5 and 10. Dividing the fraction by 2 yields 10/15, while dividing it by 5 provides 4/6. Using 10 as a divisor gives 2/3.
- Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number Finding equivalent fractions through multiplication yields an infinite amount of possibilities. If 20/30 is multiplied by 2, this equals an equivalent fraction of 40/60.
