California's main energy source is natural gas. The state also generates power from wind, coal and nuclear sources. Renewable sources of energy include biomass, geothermal, solar and wind.

California is reducing its dependence on in-state hydroelectric generation because of increasing drought conditions and reduced snowpack accumulation. The state reduced its overall electricity consumption from 2013 to 2014 by 1 percent, and it decreased the amount of electricity imported from the Northwest and Southwest by 2.6 percent. 2014 was the warmest winter on record in the state, and Southern California experienced slowed economic growth.

California has one remaining nuclear power plant, PG&E's Diablo Canyon Power Plant. Diablo Canyon provided 5.8 percent of the state's required electricity in 2014.
