The body covering of a dolphin is referred to as “skin.†Dolphins do not have scales like many other marine animals, nor do they have fur like some other mammals.
Like humans, dolphins have multiple layers of skin. However, a dolphin’s skin is anywhere from 10 to 20 times thicker than human skin. Their old skin cells flake off, revealing a new outer layer of skin every couple of hours.
A dolphin’s skin has a rubbery feel. They have no hair and no sweat glands. A streamlined body shape makes them well-suited for moving through the water without much friction.
