According to the Sleep Foundation, insomnia is the medical term that refers to being unable to sleep. Mayo Clinic notes that adults suffering from infrequent insomnia is common, but long-term or chronic insomnia affects overall quality of life.
Insomnia symptoms include difficulty falling asleep at night, awakening during the night, awakening too early, not feeling well rested after a night's sleep, daytime tiredness or sleepiness, tension headaches and ongoing worrying about sleep, states Mayo Clinic. The Sleep Foundation recommends winding down for at least 30 minutes before bed, disconnecting from electronics, calming the mind with a breathing exercise and waking up at the same time every day to ward off insomnia.
