When chickadees store seeds and other food to prepare for winter it?s called caching. Instead of eating all of the food that they find, these foragers store some of it to retrieve and eat later.
Chickadees store hundreds of seeds per day. Each seed is placed in a separate location, and the chickadee generally can locate its cached food even after a month of hiding it. Chickadees also cache nuts, insects and other invertebrate prey. Some common hiding places include knotholes, bark, in the ground, under shingles or on the underside of small branches.
Caching helps the chickadee to survive during the winter and when food sources are low. Other animals that practice caching include nuthatches and titmice.
