Why was Calvin Coolidge called "Silent Cal"?

Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States, was known as "Silent Cal" because he rarely said more on any occasion than was absolutely necessary. Despite being a man of few words, he was known for his dry wit.

Coolidge was elected as vice president in 1920 and ascended to the Oval Office when President Warren G. Harding died unexpectedly in 1923. He was elected to serve a full term in 1924. Although Coolidge was eligible to run for re-election in 1928, he chose to retire instead. In addition to speaking only when he had something to say, Coolidge was known as honest and hardworking.
