Can you access U.S. passport services online?

Some U.S. passport services are accessible online. Travelers are able to find information about when passports are required, where passport applications are accepted and the status of applications. However, as of 2015, U.S. passport applications cannot be submitted online.

The U.S. Department of State page for passports and international travel allows people to fill out applications online and print them. There is also an option to print out a blank PDF passport application to complete by hand. New passport applications must be taken to passport acceptance facilities or passport agencies. Many renewals are handled through the mail.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program service is available online. People who travel abroad and register their trips receive embassy information about travel safety. Registration allows helps the U.S. Embassy contact travelers in case of emergency.
