Can you renew a passport online?

United States passports cannot be renewed online, however, the application Form DS-82 can be filled out online, then printed and mailed. For an additional fee, passports can be expedited. Expedited passports are processed in approximately three weeks, while routine requests require four to six weeks.

Form DS-82 must be accompanied by the most recent passport book or card, applicable payment and one passport photo. Name changes require a certified copy of the marriage certificate or court order. Minors under the age of fifteen, anyone applying for a passport for the first time and those with a mutilated or damaged passport must apply in person. United States citizens living in Canada may renew their passport by mail, but those residing in other countries must renew theirs at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
