In order to renew a Canadian passport, the passport holder must first be eligible for a renewal and submit the existing passport along with two recent photos, a passport renewal application (also available in a simplified format) and the fee for renewal. Once a renewal request has been made, the existing passport will be canceled.
Canadian residents can renew their passports with the following steps.
- Check eligibility
- Fill out the renewal form and take photos
- Submit the form, photos and existing passport
The passport holder must havethe same name shown on the passport, which must also match the name given on the application form. Additionally, if the existing passport is damaged in any way, was not valid for 5to 10yearsor has been reported stolen, the applicant will not be eligible for a renewal and will need to apply for a new passport.
A renewal form can be downloaded from the Passport Canada website. The form should be filled out andsubmitted with two photos and the existing passport. Any submitted photos need to include the date the photos were taken and the name and address of the photographer or photography studio. This information must be written on the back of one of the photos.
The completed application form, photos and current passport can either be mailed to the Canadian passport office or dropped off in person at a local Passport Canada office. The processing time for a passport renewal is the same regardless of which method is used.
