The Beck depression test can be self-administered or verbally administered by a trained administrator, reports Pearson Education. It is an assessment tool for depression used within the practice of cognitive behavioral therapy.

The Beck depression test takes five minutes to complete, says Pearson Education, and is the most widely used assessment tool for detecting depression. The test follows the criteria for depression listed in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The test consists of twenty-one questions that not only assess the presence of depression, but the severity of depression as well, allowing a way to successfully track recovery progress.
