The anode rod in a water heater can be replaced. The anode is a rod made of metal that corrodes over time Replacing the anode can extend the life of the water heater.
Anode rods are typically installed on the top of the hot water heater or on a pipe on the side of the tank. The anode extends into the hot water heater and can be removed for replacement. When corrosion occurs inside a hot water heater, the anode rod corrodes before the liner of the tank. Replacing a corroded anode tube prevents the liner of the hot water heater from corroding.
