Barrett's esophagus cannot be cured, but it can be slowed and even prevented in some cases by controlling acid reflux, notes WebMD. Changes in diet, sleeping with the head elevated and prescription medications are often effective treatments.

People who have Barrett's esophagus or are at risk for developing the disease should avoid fatty foods, spicy foods and alcohol, states WebMD. It is also best to avoid lying down for three hours after eating and to take all medications with plenty of water. A very small number of people who develop Barrett's esophagus develop cancerous or precancerous cells. In some cases, removal of some or most of the esophagus is a treatment option, according to WebMD.
