Basketball was invented in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. He was an instructor at a YMCA training school and wanted to develop something that could be played indoors to keep young men occupied during the long winters. A soccer ball was used to play the game until the first basketball was marketed in 1894. The first professional basketball game was played in New Jersey in 1896.
