How often can you breed a dog?

When a male dog and bitch are willing to breed, it is OK to breed them every other day. Owners should ensure their dogs are healthy and at an appropriate age before breeding.

Prior to breeding, owners need to take the right steps to ensure their animals are ready:

• Dogs should be age 2 and older, whereas females should be between ages 2 and 3. It is important to wait until the female is fully grown to ensure she is healthy and to identify underlying diseases.
• Screening for diseases is essential during the breeding process as many are hereditary and can pass down to the pups. This includes looking for hip dysplasia, eye conditions and Brucellosis. A veterinarian can provide full guidance on the types of diseases dogs and bitches should be screened for.
