Around 3000 B.C., Chinese ink hit the market. The name "India ink" was used later because the materials to make it typically originated in India. The liquid ink is made from soot, water and a binding material. It is sometimes sold as a solid stick, which must be combined with water.

The black ink historically was historically used for printing or writing text but today is more often used for drawing, especially comic books and comic strips.
